It’s still early days to conclude if we will succeed with the running contact.. at times you get impatient when training running contacts on the dogwalk (RDW) and want a greater success rate 😉
I had signed Vini up for a competition and she would be running on a new dogwalk. Unfortunately this was an old type of dogwalk, which not only was a bit slippery but also a bit unstable (moving sideways). At first agility run, some dogs lost the grip and jumped off the dogwalk – so I decided not to let Vini seek the dogwalk on her own but helped her get a straight approach to the dogwalk – but then I was very much behind her.
At the second run the dogs had a straight approach but the exit setup I hadn’t trained yet. Vini had much more confidence the second time but didn’t know where to go (well, that’s also due to my lack of indication ;-)).
She missed the contact both times but I am anyway pleased with her performance: she can be very airy when she lacks confidence but here she was striding nicely. I actually think that if she had had a good grip then she wouldn’t have missed 😉
Video from competition:
At training it’s seldom that Vini miss the contact at the very first try but she often doesn’t hit as low as I would like – she only hits contact with a single paw. From third try she usually starts hitting low with both paws and with good separation – of course that’s nice but aim is that she hits like this at the very first try as well 🙂
Apart form training more exit scenarios, it’s now also a must that she tries different dogwalks at different locations to improve her skills.
